{November Sewing Update}

December 6, 2019 by kelerr

I cannot tell you how much less pressure I feel doing these posts as “sewing updates” rather than makes posts. I don’t feel like I have to rush to get something done to show it off, and the truth is, other things that need to get done would suffer for that. Updates means I can show off works in progress, which makes it so much easier! As with last month, most of this month has been utterly and completely focused […]

{What I Read: November 2019}

December 3, 2019 by kelerr

Despite having a very busy month, I managed to squeeze in a number of books thanks to a sick day and Thanksgiving break. Let’s get right into it shall we? The Family Upstairs, by Lisa Jewell was SO GOOD. I’ve read a few of Jewells books before and liked them, but none so much as this one. It was a creepy psychological thriller with three narrators who alternated chapters. They are connected to each other, that much is obvious going […]

{Sewing is Cheaper Than Therapy}

November 29, 2019 by kelerr

I have has this post sitting in my drafts for months, mostly written but never posted. While the title is an amusing statement said by many sewists, for me it actually covers a semi-heavier topic. I have generalized anxiety disorder, with a strong lean towards social anxiety disorder (or perhaps the other way around if I’m being completely honest; I become a nervous wreck anticipating social situations and things that often seem like nothing to other people – like calling […]

{Out and About: Frozen II}

November 26, 2019 by kelerr

Confession time: until this year, Frozen was never really on my radar. I’d seen it before, I knew the songs, I knew the characters but I wasn’t a super fan or anything like that. I don’t even know if I was even technically a fan. I liked the movie, but it was basically just another Disney movie. However, since Frozen, Jr. became our musical, and I have had to research and prep costumes, Frozen Fever has taken over full force […]

{Out and About: Charles James, Beyond Fashion}

November 22, 2019 by kelerr

Note: This is a repost from 2014, as I completely forgot about providing a blog post for today!Regardless, it’s fun to dice into the archives and share something that may be new to you all. Today I FINALLY made it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibit, Charles James: Beyond Fashion. And I can say without a doubt that Charles James is my favorite designer. I’ve been familiar with his work, but being able to see it in […]

{The Costume Design of Edith Head: Part Two}

November 19, 2019 by kelerr

When I last wrote about The Dress Doctor, I had gotten through four full chapters and was about halfway through chapter five. Since then, I have not had much reading time, but I managed to make it through a few more chapters and have plenty more to write about! When we pick up the book again, Edith Head has become the head designer at Paramount Pictures. Her first movie under this new title was Cafe Society with Madeleine Carroll, which […]

{Costume Design Archives: Little Shop of Horrors}

November 15, 2019 by kelerr

It’s time for another edition of my own costume design archives. Today I’ll be taking you through my design and thought process for Little Shop of Horrors. We did the show in 2008. This spring, it will be twelve years since it debuted, and we still have some of the costumes up in our costume room. Others have been donated or have fallen by the wayside over the years. In fact, most of them have gone missing since they were […]

{The Costume Design of Edith Head, Part One}

November 12, 2019 by kelerr

I recently acquired a first edition copy of The Dress Doctor, Edith Head’s autobiography (co-written by Jane Kesner Ardmore). It’s a fascinating little book full of details about Head’s working for Paramount Pictures, and she is not shy about sharing various details about the stars she worked with. I must admit that for someone as interested in costume design as I am, the amount of movies I have seen with costumes designed by Edith Head is extremely small. As I […]

{A Homemade Halloween: The Price is Right}

November 8, 2019 by kelerr

People believe that I am super into Halloween, when in reality I am just super into costumes. Thus, whenever my work Halloween costume competition comes around, I like to go all out. This year I used an idea I’ve had brewing for a couple of years now, but for whatever reason changed at the last minute. However, it was finally time. I wanted my Most Creative Costume title back, so I knew I had to bring out the big guns. […]

Season three of @maiseltv is live!!! This show has been a favorite since I first watched the pilot during Amazon’s pilot season but now will always have a special place because of all the great people I’ve connected with through a shared loved of all things Maisel (@minimaedelcreates @msjennmakes @madeline @theserialhobbyistgirl and @katieemilyl just time name a few 😄). I’m am so gonna be up WAY too late tonight watching and be a joy at my work holiday party tomorrow (make sure you read the sarcasm into that last part). Even more excited to see @dzakowska speak on Tuesday! #marvelousmrsmaisel #costumes #costumedesigniappreciate #donnazakowska #costuming #costumedesign #midgemaisel
Love this idea from @vladivos and @timetosew - I will be participating in February once we close out Frozen Jr! I’ve got four physical books (plus two Sew Over It ebooks) I can choose from! #sewing #memade #sewyourbooks #memadewardrobe #diywardrobe #idratherbesewing #nycsews #brooklynsews #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #sewcialist #sewcialistsofinstagram

Some more Frozen Jr. detail work for the villagers of Arendelle. Don’t think I’ve ever used this much gimp braid in my entire life. #frozen #frozenjr #sewing #diycostumes #arendelle #gimpbraid #sewing #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #sewcialist #sewcialistsofinstagram #nycsews #brooklynsews #frozenthemusical #frozenbroadway #costumedesign #costumedesigner #costumer #costumersofinstagram #idratherbesewing #frozenfever
I have been all over the place lately. Frozen Fever is basically my entire life. I managed to cut out a dress for myself but haven’t touched it since. I’m kind of okay with this. But also kind of not. Itching to make myself stuff but I am also SO EXCITED about Frozen and the work I’ve been doing! Like I want it to be February to see all of this onstage but I’m also not even a little bit ready for it to be February... I’m just a waking contradiction these days! Anyway, here are two of our Annas (we have three shows, three Annas and Elsas) wearing their costumes. #sewing #memade #frozen #frozenjr #costuming #costumer #costumersofinstagram #costumedesign #costumedesigner #anna #musical #schoolplay #performingarts #frozenbroadway #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #sewcialist #sewcialistsofinstagram #nycsews #brooklynsews #frozenfever #memadecostumes #sewingismylife #idratherbesewing #diycostumes
It’s always fun to get back to work after a long weekend and find the notes I leave for myself on my desk. #sewing #costuming #frozen #frozenjr #reindeersarebetterthanpeople #sven #costumer #costumersofinstagram #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #sewcialist #sewcialistsofinstagram #nycsews #brooklynsews
